Urban Vegetable Farmer Associate
Feed Iowa First is a grass-roots community of businesses, faith organizations, schools, farmers, and volunteers that unite in relationship-based service to help our neighbors Combat Food Insecurity by Growing Food and Farmers. We believe access to fresh, healthy produce can and does transform lives. Fresh, healthy food is a basic human right, and ensuring access to it is key to building vibrant communities where citizens can reach their full human potential.
Feed Iowa First is the main producer and provider of fresh produce to food pantries in Linn County. We distributed over 50,000lbs of nutrient-dense produce back into our community in 2022.
You will be involved in 3 of our 5 programs within the Feed Iowa First Organization.
Grow Don’t Mow – Feed Iowa First manages 20+ urban farm sites in Linn Country growing nutrient-dense produce to distribute back into the community free of charge, no questions asked. The Urban Vegetable Associate position works directly with each site coordinating maintenance and harvest.
Distribution – Under the direction of our Distribution and Systems Coordinator, we partner with food pantries, apartment complexes, and resource centers to distribute our products directly to the community. Serving over 4,400 households each year, you would be assisting with weekly pantry drops, apartment deliveries, and preparing Distribution site drops.
Grow Some Rows – Partnering with rural farmers, Feed Iowa First is able to grow large quantities of nutrient-dense produce that we do not have space for in the urban corridor. The associate will help with planting and harvesting of large quantities of produce such as cabbage and potatoes.
You will be fully immersed in all aspects of operations as part of our farm crew. This includes but is not limited to watering, weeding, harvesting, engaging with volunteers, intake of produce and assisting with distribution.
