Vegetable Farm Hand (2 positions)

Under the direction of the Program Manager and Farm Manager, the Vegetable Farm Hand AmeriCorps is responsible for assisting in all aspects of field and production. The Farm Hand will follow a schedule for field preparation, planting, seeding, weeding, safe harvesting and handling of produce for distribution. The Farm Hand will work directly with and guide volunteers in food safety protocols and assist in Distribution when necessary. This is a part-time position that requires availability on weekdays and occasional weekends (if in the CR area). 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience leading groups of volunteers
  • Experience with farming, gardening, landscaping, agronomy, or conservation

Required Qualifications:

  • A valid driver’s license
  •  Ability to plan ahead, adapt, and possess proficient time management skills
  •  Eagerness to learn!
  • Must be 18+

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assist the Farm Manager and Program Manager 
  • Field Prep 
  • Tilling, irrigation and plastic laying, compost spreading, etc. 
  • Field Maintenance  
  • Weeding, watering, harvesting, use of organic remediation, etc. 
  • Intake and handling of produce 
  • Assist with distribution when necessary 
  • Work with and guide volunteers 
  • Ensure they understand food safety and physical safety protocols 
  • Assist Site Ambassadors with fields and urgent needs such as pest control 

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:  

Experience Required 

  • Willingness to learn to safely operate farm equipment 
  • Excellent communicator to work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse group of people both internally and externally 
  • Ability to be adaptive and innovative to resolve challenges; working flexibly and efficiently 
  • Integrity, positive attitude and passionate about the mission of Feed Iowa First; Combating food insecurity by growing food and farmers 
  • Experience with Office Suites, internet and basic office tasks 

Commitment:  1 year. August 2022-August 2023. Full-time.

Member Outcomes:

  • Leave Feed Iowa First with working knowledge of chemical-free vegetable farming, irrigation design and harvesting.
  • Deepened understanding of food access issues
  • Functional knowledge of database systems and GAP Certification
  • Experience working with diverse and immigrant communities

 

Pay Rate and Compensation 

Benefits 

450 hrs. Over 16 weeks – 20hrs/week

$5,085 Living Allowance 

$1,718.25 Education Stipend upon completion.
