Feed Iowa First: VeggieRx Program

Feed Iowa First is excited to announce our VeggieRx program, in collaboration with the Eastern Iowa Health Center and the Community Health Free Clinic. This innovative initiative aims to alleviate food insecurity and promote healthier lifestyles by providing fresh, locally-grown vegetables to individuals and families in need.

What is VeggieRx?

VeggieRx is a prescription program that offers fresh produce to patients who are facing food insecurity and diet-related health issues. Healthcare providers at the Eastern Iowa Health Center and the Community Health Free Clinic identify patients who would benefit from increased access to nutritious food and “prescribe” fresh vegetables as part of their treatment plan.

How It Works:

  1. Healthcare Partnership: Patients at participating clinics are screened for food insecurity and diet-related health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
  2. Prescription: Eligible patients receive a VeggieRx prescription and connect with the Feed Iowa First Veggie Van or pick up at the clinic
  3. Education: Alongside the fresh produce, patients are connected to Iowa State Extension’s Buy.Eat.Live.Healthy program to support shopping and cooking confidence.

By addressing the root causes of food insecurity, food access, and poor nutrition, VeggieRx aims to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations. The program not only provides immediate access to nutritious food but also empowers participants with the knowledge and resources to maintain changes.

The 2023 Type 2 Diabetes Pilot decreased A1c levels in 80% of participants. Secondary events included lower blood pressure, decreased BMI, and decreased medications.
